I started my first blog about 8 years ago. I was 18 and had just gotten married and moved away from home. I wanted a way to share my experiences and stay connected with my family. Shortly after starting I realized that not only do people make a living doing this but that there was a huge community of bloggers out there. This was the start of my desire to make a living online, blogging. I have flirted with this idea of blogging full-time, but I honestly don’t think I was emotionally or mentally ready to begin. It took me 7 years to finally accept who I am and what I want out of my life.
If you are here because you are thinking about starting a blog, please be sure to check out my step-by-step guide to starting a blog!
I am tired of researching and gaining information, yet doing nothing with it. I am tired of saying I want to work online but my actions don’t match that desire. This is the life I want. I want to live a non-traditional life, homeschool my daughter, travel, and make enough money on my blog to sustain that lifestyle (without my husband having to work, too).
So, I’ve made goals. Big ones! This year I am going to try to prove that you can make a full-time income on a nicheless blog in less than a year. I have more work to do this year than I have probably ever done. It will be emotional, stressful at times, but worth it (if I can succeed!).
Without further adieu…..
My 2017 Blogging Goals
100K views per month
This is significantly more views than I have right now. I currently get around 1000/month without trying. While I don’t think this is impossible, I will have to be incredibly intentional with how I share my blog.
Guest Posting | My goal will be to submit 3-6 guest posts each month to site with substantially larger audiences than I have. This will allow people who are a part of another audience to hear my voice and will bring additional people to my site.
Pinterest | I will be joining very strategic group boards with a large reach to help my posts to be pinned easily. I will also be using Tailwind to schedule my pins and Board Booster to loop my pins within the group boards. This will help more people find my content and raise the spread of my pins. I will also make sure to have Rich Pins enabled and improve the data within my images to help them come up more on Pinterest.
Social Media | I will be intentional about growing my social media networks. I will try to focus mainly on one at a time. I will spend substantial time building that audience and creating a culture within my social media profiles. When I move onto another network, I will continue to my process for the other ones as well. My goal is to create a “snowball effect”. Start with one, build momentum, then allow that momentum to help build the next.
Connections & Collaborations | I will be focusing time on connecting with other bloggers and collaborating with them to create content/share content. Having a community is so important and will not only help my blog grow but also theirs.
My YouTube channel | I will talk further about this below, but I want to connect my channel and my blog.
SEO | I know a little bit about SEO right now, but I intend to learn a lot more! I will have quality SEO on each blog post, my entire blog, and all my images.
$6000+/mo before taxes
$6000/month may seem really high, but that would provide my family with around $3600/month after taxes (which are around 30% for self-employment). If I get to this point, I will probably look into incorporating to save money on taxes. This number would allow us the flexibility to pay all of our bills and save for the future. It would also allow my husband to not work and focus on his passion for freelance writing, without the stress of money.
To reach this level of income I will need multiple income streams that don’t rely solely on traffic since it can change quickly.
Affiliate Programs | I will use affiliate programs to share the products that I love. Since I will be writing a lot about products, sites, and programs that I love, this will probably be a decent part of my income stream. I will share affiliate links intentionally. I will also make a few big affiliate posts (with links such a BlueHost) that I will push strongly on social media.
Products | I will touch on these in a moment, but I want to release several products this year that can bring in income for me.
Ads | Initially I will be using Google Adsense and maybe look into using Media.net. I tried Svorn but no ad units showed up. So I may have been using it incorrectly. If I can reach my readership goal, I will be able to sign up for ad networks that provide higher paying ads. I will also place ads that link to my affiliate programs. The hardest thing will be to avoid adding too many ads. I HATE when ads block content, so I will have to have some trial and error with ad placement.
I will also add ad units within some of my popular posts, after a week or two. I want to respect my regular readers and give them a change to read it with minimal ads.
Sponsored Posts | While I am not opposed to writing a sponsored post, I am not sure if I will search these out. As of now, I have no intention of using sponsored posts, but we will see how things progress.

launch 3 products
Products can be a great way to make income because you make all of it. It isn’t based on sales from other sites, it is yours. There is also something about selling a product that is my own. My heart and soul will be a part of those products.
I plan to create at least 3 quality products this year. I am not sure yet what these will be (possibly ebooks). Since I have a nicheless blog, I have to take that into account when I create a product. It either needs to be hyper focused towards a portion of my following or general enough that everyone who reads can enjoy. I will probably release one late spring, end of summer, and late fall.
This doesn’t include small products that I will make an offer for free periodically throughout the year.
launch 1 course
I also want to launch a course this year. Once again, I am not sure yet what this will be about or what format I want it to be, but I do know that I want to create a course. These will require a ton of research and creative sales funnels. I am thinking this will not launch til later in the year, possibly around the time of my last product.
10k subscribers on YouTube
My YouTube channel has been a serious afterthought the last few years. I used to post a ton of videos on cloth diapering, my complicated pregnancy, and my birth story. These videos have done surprisingly well and I already have a bit of a start on there. I am currently at almost 500 subscribers and nearly 100,000 views.
Vlogs | I am super excited about adding vlogging to my process! I could spend hours watching vlogs and I would love to make them about some of the subjects I blog about. Examples of the kinds of vlogs I want to do are: “A day in the life”, adventures outside, my journey starting a channel and blogging, natural living, etc…
Plan with Me | I love doing planner decoration and bullet journaling. This will have a big part of my blog and I want to connect that to my YouTube as well.
Tips, Tricks, & DIY | Following in the types of videos I made in the past, I want to create videos that walk people through creating things for their homes and tips to help make their lives easier. People have communicated that they really like how thorough and easy to understand my tutorials are, so I want to value that input and use it.
Art Time-lapses | This is definitely later in the year, but I want to start making time-lapse videos of painting I do and sharing those.
Artistic Inspiration | I would love to make videos that are just inspiring and artistic. This may include travel, health, homeschooling, etc…
I will also share all of my videos in blog post form so that I can easily connect my two audiences and create some overlap, as well as boost my views.
5000 Email Subscribers
My final goal is to have an email list with 5000 subscribers on it (right now, I have 17….). This will be a big focus for me early on. Your email list is like gold. You have to nurture those readers because they are committed. They want to hear what you have to say and are interested in the things you have to offer.
Initially, I will be using Mailchimp for my email list because I know how to use it. However, once I start making an income and get more emails, I will be switching over to ConvertKit for my email lists. ConvertKit has amazing conversion options and I love that they have amazing options for having multiple email lists. I hope to make this migration in the next month or two.
Email Incentive | I will create a small product or something to offer for free to my subscribers. This will create an incentive for people to sign up for my list in exchange for something. I will have a super cute button for it and intentionally add it within my posts.
Quality Opt-ins | I want everything on my blog to look cohesive, be high quality, and not distract from my content. I want to create beautiful looking opt-ins that offer a solution rather than just say, “sign up now”.
Landing Pages | Whenever I create a new product, write a guest post, or offer something for free, I will create a landing page for that product. Not only will this help sell the product by telling more about what it offers, but it also only gives one option: Sign up. I will also share my landing pages a few times a month on social media.
Those are all my blogging goals for 2017. I feel like I have a ton to do, but I know that I can do it. I have enough information in my brain from years of only researching, I now just have to apply it all. A few other small things that I will do that will help me reach my goals are:
- Treat social media as an extension of my blog rather than separate
- Release several blog posts a week within my different categories
- Create very intentional branding for a cohesive, quality look
- Continue to evolve my writing so it is easy to read, clear, and concise. I have about 3 seconds to capture someone’s attention
- Comment strategically on blogs that are within the categories that I write.
- Give love to other bloggers through sharing and interacting online with them.
- Check my links regularly
- Connect my blog posts and videos through internal links. I want to help people stay here as long as possible.
